Emergency situations happen. It’s vital to keep your community informed about the situation, from sharing what you can during the crisis to reports following the incident. Sharing this information is vital to maintaining families’ trust: it shows that your district or school is committed to safety and transparency. Accessible Information

Providing information and updates is only helpful if people can access it. Ensure the page is easy to find in your menu, meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, and can be translated into different languages. For ongoing situations, create a top-level page to host all the information so families don’t have to go hunting in your menu. 

Not everyone accesses the internet in the same way. Some people can’t use a keyboard or a mouse and use specialized tools to navigate the web. Your website provider should ensure that most of this is built into the website for you, but ensure you’re not accidentally adding barriers when you add your content. Always follow these best practices when adding content to your website: 

  • Use text styles to apply headings and subheadings
  • Include an alternate text description for images 
  • Ensure there’s no text in images 
  • Use strong colour contrast
